Why Make Your Own Skateboarding Video?

Why Make Your Own Skateboarding Video?

Skateboard champions around the world have filled up skate-shops with their skate-videos demonstrating their personal techniques. These videos are the best means of passing knowledge about techniques and tricks on in skateboarding. Often presented in the form of a series and sometimes collaboration between two or more skateboarding pros, a skateboarding video is to a new skateboard hobbyist a fountain of hope on the path to becoming a skillful thrasher.

The type of compilation or a team-up between respected skateboard artists that occurs in a skateboarding video provides advice and lessons that can't be drawn from reading regular how-to books. Skateboarding videos work far more effectively than books as instructional materials because the former can be easily comprehended by playing over and over again the moves and tricks . A beginer who is interested in becoming an advanced skateboarder can profit greatly by watching these videos.

Often I attempt to bring over non-skateboarders into the world of skateboarding, and once they can coast along I try to teach them some basic skateboard tricks. Incase you're a newbie viewing my blog I'm going to help you out by explaining in detail three basic skateboard tricks. These tricks will include the manual, ollie, and drop-in. Remember though before you start trying these tricks you should be able to coast on the board with confidance.

Manual

This basic skateboard trick is necessary for turning, and for riding the bowl and ramps. In essence you are attempting to turn while on your two back wheels. You can attempt this while stalled as well as while coasting.

One foot should be on the very tip of the tail and the other foot should be in the center of the board.

Pressure is applied to the tail and released from the center inorder to balance on the two back wheels. Getting this part down is important.

Then to turn use twist your upper body in a quick jerking motion while keeping your core muscles tight so to not leave your legs behind. Using the motion from your upper body is more effective than using the motion of your legs because your legs have less weight to them and you're more likely to leave behind your upper body throwing off your balance.

You'll likely start out making tiny turns but as you get better you should be able to 180 to come back down a ramp and even 360 just to look neat.

Ollie

The ollie is a basic skateboard trick on which many other tricks are based. Once you can do the ollie you can move on to the kickflip, shove-it and so on. The ollie is basicaly three motions preformed in unison, these are push, slide and jump.

One foot should be on the very tip of the tail and the other foot should be in the center of the board.

The three motions are preformed basically simultaniously although it helps to think of it in order to begin with, later you will think of it as one motion.

First push, push down on the tail so as to snap up the nose into the air.

Second jump, jump up so as allow the tail to follow it's course upwards and to lift your weight off the ground.

Third slide, slide your centre foot to the nose as you jump so that your board levels our. By sliding your foot over the front end it will stop it from rising higher which causes the tail end to rise.

Of course it's important to remember to land on the board, one piece of advice for that is don't land on your heels, always land on your toes. Also don't lock your knees when you land.

Drop-in

Place your tail at the edge of the bowl, stand on your back foot on the tail and your front foot near the front but not on the curve of the nose.

Keep both feet in parallel to the edge of the bowl, perpindicular to your board.

Then (here's the fun part) lean forward, and keep leaning forward until your wheels are on the wall, or else you'll fall backwards... but don't lean forward too long or you'll fall forward.

Once you're on the wall don't forget to adjust as you transfer from straight down to flat. If you know how you can pump as you hit the bottom for more speed.

All three of these basic skateboard tricks can be built apon to become a superior skateboarder. Good luck and wear a helmet! (Especially for droping-in)

Girl Skateboarders?

There's this thing that happens when a girl walks into a skate park. Every head turns, some look away, others just keep watching to see what she's got.

This can be highly intimidating for a girl who's just starting out. Guys who just start out, get a certain amount of consideration, after all if he can't do an Ollie it's obvious he's only just started. If you're female though watch out for the accusations... If you can't Ollie and you're female the assumption isn't so much that you're new, it's that being a female obviously you won't be any good. You're accused of being in the way. You're accused of skating to "get a guy".

This treatment has caused girls to retaliate in a typically non-aggressive way, although there are those who know not the word pacifist. They go late at night and early in the morning as groups to learn and practice together at a time when they can be the majority. They often intend to eventually throw off the habit of sneaking around and come out to skate at the regular times... once they "get good enough".

Unfortunately unless they become familiar with the level of intimidation that is present at skate parks for females, they will likely never skate in a crowd. Not to mention that just because you "get good enough" doesn't mean that people will stop watching you or judging you more severely due to being a minority. In fact as you improve you'll be more closely watched and the comments will be more audible, simply because people in general don't easily adjust their view points, instead they look for verification that what they already believe is correct. So every time the girl riding the bowl wipes out that's a confirmation that girls as a group can't skate.

In essence guys are judged as individuals, girls are judged as a group. This will continue until the point that either skater chicks increase in number, or they prove themselves as individuals and throw off the perception that they are a symbol and not a person. I'm not saying they need be as good as or better than the best male skaters, all I'm saying is that they need to stop hiding and standing at the edges and interact with other skaters so that they will be known for who they are and not what they represent.
